In first aid, you will sometimes get lucky and know exactly what is wrong with the person that you are trying to help. More often that not, though, you will come upon a person who has just been in an accident or been injured in some other know, and you have no idea what has happened to them. In these cases, your priority is to perform an emergency medical exam and to check the ABCs of first aid: Airway, Breathing, and Circulation.

When you first step onto the scene of an emergency, it is not wise to immediately rush to the aid of the victims, no matter how much you may want to. The first things you need to do are to check for safety and to call 911.

You will not be able to help anybody if you get yourself hurt, so you need to stop, listen, and look for anything on the scene of the emergency that could hurt you. Is there a downed power line nearby? Is there a fire? Is there traffic? Look for water that make be connected to a source of electricity. People have been electrocuted while stepping through a puddle of water. If the scene is safe, call 911. You can either do this yourself or, preferable if there are others around, instruct a bystander to make the call.

Airway

Now, check the victims. See if the victim is conscious and alert, and as them what is wrong. If they are not, check their pulse and breathing. The first A, Airway, is very important. Put your ear to the victim’s face and see if you can hear breathing, and also see if the chest is rising and falling. If the airway seems to be obstructed, use your index finger (preferably while hearing gloves), but sweep the victims mouth and throat in order to remove any obstructions.

Breathing

Next, breathing. If you have cleared the airway and there is still no breathing, initiate CPR. Tilt the victim’s head back breath into their mouth, and then start chest compressions. The basic rule is 30 chest compressions for every rescue breath.

Circulation

After that comes circulation. Keep in mind that if the first thing you notice when you come to help a victim is catastrophic bleeding, you need to get that under control before worrying about airway and breathing. Otherwise, carefully inspect the victim for blood on the skin or the clothes, and treat any open wounds. Keep in mind that blood on the victim may have come from someone else, so it may not actually indicate a wound.

Once you have done that, stay with the victim and try to reassure them until help arrives. Congratulations: using the simple ABC formula, you may have just saved someone’s life.

More children become frustrated trying to put their clothes away into drawers that are already full of clothing they have outgrown. They then get in trouble for not putting everything away properly. There’s a scripture that says “do not provoke your children to anger”. This is one of those cases where parents do it all the time.

Sit down and plan how many outfits each member of your family needs. Most families wash the laundry once a week or more. You don’t need 15 pairs of jeans for each child. Three or four pairs will work just fine. A newborn may need 10 pairs of pajamas since the newborn lives in them and spits up on them, but a 10 year old only needs three or four pairs. Here are a few guidelines to help you get started. Like I said, feel free to adjust this to best fit your family. Hopefully by following these guidelines you will be able to cut back on your clothes budget and get more use out of what you do have.

You can get most kids clothes at garage sales for a fraction of the new price. Be picky and only buy the few things you love. By spending one morning going to garage sales, I found all the clothes I needed for my 3 year old son. We usually get enough clothing as Christmas gifts, but this year he didn’t get everything that he needed. I spent three hours and $5 on everything from shirts to shoes. I got 10 shirts, 5 pairs of jeans, 3 pairs of shoes and 4 pairs of pajamas. I saved myself $225. That is $75 an hour I “earned” by going to garage sales or 24 hours (3 days) less my husband would have had to work to buy the clothes.

Laundry and Children

I am probably the only mom who would not allow my children to put their clothes away until they were older. Why? Because, by the time I had carefully washed, beautifully folded and ironed everything, I didn’t want it to be dumped, wadded, smashed and mooshed between the laundry room and my children’s bedrooms. It’s amazing what a husband and child can do to a clean pile of laundry!

Even though I say that, children do need to be taught how to do laundry from beginning to end. From the age of four or five I would have the kids help me fold wash rags and underwear. Once they succeeded in those things, we would moved on to other things.

As soon as they were tall enough, I had them help put clothes in the washer, then move them to the dryer to fluff and finally take them out of the dryer. Young children seem to love doing this, so let them.

By the time they are old enough to start cooking simple things on the stove, they are old enough to start ironing with supervision — Boys, too.

Once kids reach high school, they should be able to take care of their own clothes from start to finish. Until I had them very well trained, I didn’t expect them to do the laundry alone. This wasn’t a bad thing. I enjoyed visiting and learning about their day while we folded clothes together or while I was ironing.

Did you know your sweater came from the lower half of a goat?

Cashmere is made from the underhair of the Kashmir goat. The best underhair on the goat is found on the lower half of the body and on the goat’s belly. Harvesting this hair is not like shoring a sheep although that’s what happens outside of China, India and Pakistan.

The traditional method of harvest involves combing the goat so that only the fine underhairs are removed not the coarse top layer of hair. Believe it or not, but it can take up to three days to comb a single goat. Each goat yields about 150 grams of underhair. That’s less than 5.5 ounces. By comparison, a sheep will produce 100 to 300 pounds of wool each year depending on the breed. Can you see where cashmere is a pretty scarce commodity?

Once this cashmere “wool” is gathered it is then de-haired where the long hair that was removed during the harvesting process is separated from the underhair. The resulting hairs are then cleaned, dyed and either spun into yarn or woven into fabric.

In the past, that usually meant that the raw product would be sent to Scotland or Italy who are both famous for their excellent spinning and weaving industries. However, China has invested hugely in the technology and today a good portion of the harvest is processed by the Chinese.

So the next time you pull on that cashmere sweater think about that cute goat (or two) that had his belly combed for your enjoyment. Cashmere rocks and so do Kashmir goats.
